I Graduated. The B2B is, Too!

Image
This past weekend, I officially graduated from my dream school. What can I say? After 3 days of 3 ceremonies, countless hugs, countless "We did it!"I'm pretty darn proud of myself. I don't necessarily have some huge job opportunity lined up, but I'm taking my accomplishments as they come. There were many times when walking across that stage didn't seem like a reality, and to be sitting here looking at my diploma from the school I pined over all of high school? Huge. And now, I take the Bridge to Bliss higher. This blog has been around though so much, and I cannot wait for the B2B to matriculate just as I have. With that being said, there will be a brief hiatus of time for me to make that blog matriculation a reality. Keep your eyes opened, and sign up for notifications so that you are one of the first to be revealed to the glo' up. In the mean time, check out some of the photos from graduation weekend below! When you get a degree from the b

A Letter for Kay: Advice to New College Students

Here's a wild fact: I graduate in less than a week. And even though I've known that fact for a while now (except, maybe, right before my econ final), it's still not real enough. I still cannot fathom how these last four years flew by but at the same time went excruciatingly slow. It's been a hell of a ride, let me tell you. Northwestern was my dream school for as long as I can remember. I applied early decision because there was never another option for me, honestly. I wanted to go to the best journalism school, despite snarky remarks from classmates insinuating that I wasn't good enough. And when I got in , honey, excited was an understatement. I started my first day of college in 2013. And now I'll be walking across a stage to get this expensinve diploma in a week. I can't say it's all been pleasant - because it hasn't. It's been a tough ride many days, some I wondered if this day would ever come. Some I felt so isolated and alone that I f

Defying the Odds

Image
It seems like whenever I'm all set and ready to give up on myself, the universe sends a message to keep pushing forward. For the past two nights, I've attended a Defy Ventures pitching competition. Defy Ventures is a non-profit organization that connects venture capitalists with currently and formerly incarcerated entrepreneurs. Each night, I was completely blown away at not only the ideas of the Entrepreneurs-in-Training (EITs), but the burning passion and knowledge for the work they were doing. Let me be honest: while San Francisco and Silicon Valley are truly hubs for tech and there's a bunch of cool stuff going on here, this place isn't some magical progressive utopia like many pretend to think. It's over-saturated with straight, wealthy white men who see themselves as the standard for what innovation means. You've been living under a rock to not know about the terrible diversity numbers in the tech industry. This quarter has been a little frustrating b

Blessings Keep Fallin' In My Lap

Image
I can't even lie, this week has been pretty freakin' great. I've secured some details for important school projects, have networked with some really great people within the field I hope to join after graduation, got to make some really cute DIY chocolates ...oh, and got super cheap luxury tickets. Last night, I attended Chance the Rapper's concert here in the Bay - and it was awesome . What's even more amazing is that as of last week, I wasn't even going. At a school-sponsored chocolate event on Tuesday, an attending alum casually mentioned that she had won two tickets to the show. But they weren't just any regular tickets - they were for a complete suite! Yeah, you know, the private rooms that come with free food and drinks, and not to mention an unbeatable view of the performance? THAT! It was soooo fun, I danced and sang to some of my favorite songs , stuffed my face with gourmet meatballs, and I didn't have to worry about childish mosh pits onc

Can I Get a Window Seat?

I just want a ticket outta town A look around And a safe touch down --- Major key: holding yourself accountable is a crucial tenet of healing. - Click here to Tweet. Now, I get it. We do live inside our bodies, and so it's much easier to analyze where Sam can improve and what Sally did wrong. But sometimes (actually, more than sometimes), we need to step outside of ourselves and see how Sierra needs to check herself. It isn't easy. In fact, it's actually pretty freakin' hard. No one wants to see how they've been toxic or hurtful to others. No one (should) ever want to be that person. But the reality of everything is that everyone is that person at times. And what's more important than owning up to this is making right by it as well. Because, as I learned on the playground in 5th grade; if you don't check yourself, you will wreck yourself. It's physics. Kind of. But seriously, think of a person who only finds fault in others while refusing to t

You know what they say: "Another day...another slay ." Or, in other words, every day is a new opportunity to express yourself through fashion! Honestly, though I wouldn't call myself a "stylist" of any sort, I love playing around with patterns, textures, and colors to create a look that screams SIERRA! I love being able to show people a piece of my personality without opening my mouth. It's a reason why I own over 50 lipsticks & lip glosses - they allow for such fun expression! Yesterday,  I decided to take advantage of being in California and took out my bright orange lipstick, Persimmon , by Anastasia Beverly Hills . I'll admit, when I first received this lippie in the mail and did a test run, I thought I made a grave mistake. "This looks terrible on me!" Twas a sad day. BUT, after countless more test runs, I figured out how to make it work for me (note to my fellow brown girls, start with a nude lip and then put Persimmon on top

Welcome to the (Bae) Area!

It's been quite a year, my friends. I returned to the United States after 3 months of interning in Argentina , and barely got to taste my grandma's collard greens before it was time to jet off again. But, this time, it wasn't to Evanston. It was to San Francisco!!! Sierra, WHY are you in San Francisco?  Well, Northwestern just opened up a campus here for students interested in media, technology, and entrepreneurship. Isn't this your last quarter of college? Yep! Well, of undergrad at least. But don't worry! I'll see Evanston again in May. You're moving around a lot! I'm young wild and free! Not to mention, I'm job searching and being in the place where most of my prospects are headquartered is such a blessing. --- View some photos of my first few days here, and if you're in the Bay? Let's grab some coffee, on me ;) Thanks to my bestie and fellow blogger, Jesse Sparks! You can check out his blog here ! My reaction walki

Week 9's Playlist of Joy

Image
Today, I was woken up by construction workers art my apartment who thought 9 AM would be the perfect time to drill into who-knows-what, along with a wailing child who has seemingly nonexistent parents two doors down. It wasn't exactly my favorite morning. And if I'm being honest? These last 2 weeks haven't been my favorite weeks, either. Maybe that's why I'm two weeks behind on the blog... So back to this morning - I definitely woke up on the wrong side of the bed. And as I dangled my feet above the ground pondering on the day ahead, I was given two choices. Happiness or otherwise. Giving my decision to the universe, I grabbed my earbuds, plugged them into my cell phone, and went straight to YouTube for my favorite melodies. I don't know about y'all, but music is and has always been such a glue in my life. Beyond being able to drown out the cries of that baby two doors down, hearing the hard work that these artists put into their musical creations puts
