Greetings & Miley Cyrus

Maybe it doesn't seem that these two are related, but watch me make it work! FIRST THINGS FIRST, Hello all! I'm back from the magic wonderland that is Northwestern. Well, not really. For one, I'm not technically back. I'm still in Evanston, I'm just back on Blogger after yet another hiatus. And, don't get me wrong, Northwestern is very much a wonderland at times. But times like now, which is midterm season, the glow of the magic wears away. Yes! It is midterm time here at NU, and all throughout campus are stressed out nerds who just want to pass. I'm one of them! I know, I know, stress is bad. But it's also easy. Between having two quizzes on top of multiple writing assignments every week in one class, over 200 pages of reading a week for another, trying to slowly become fluent in another language, AND extra-curriculars? SAVE ME, I'M DROWNING!! Honestly, it's so much!! So how have I been coping? Enjoying the simple things: time with fri...

Haven't done one of these in a while! I listened to Drake's new album, and one song specifically will not leave my head. So I'm spreading it with you!

Like-minded Individuals

Aloha! I know, I know...long time no see. But this time, it isn't because I've simply forgotten about the B2B. College is... phew! It's fun but there is very little time to blog. Recap, anyone? Classes: Are going pretty good. I have not aced every single assignment with ease, but I haven't expected to. But I'm not slacking and doing poorly. I'm doing well! My assignments are being turned in on time and they are all done with full effort (and are spent at least an hour on). We're headed into week #4, so it's time for me kick into high-gear in order to finish strong.  Extra-curriculars: In High School, I was known for having a full schedule. To avoid spreading myself too thin too soon, I've started out with only a few clubs. I'm a member of the Black Student Union, I write for a campus publication, I joined a student Christian group, and I have a job/volunteer opp mentoring intercity Chicago teens in journalism! That's enough right now...

The Black Girl Dilemma

Image
Hey, it's me again! No rants on natural hair, but just a tad bit of advertisement. A while ago, I was published in the online magazine Brownstone Magazine for my article titled "Hues of Beauty" . It was about how foolish the whole "Dark skin vs. Light skin"tension in the Black community is. If you're interested, feel free to click here and give it a read . But this post is about my most recent article published in the article for its September issue and relaunch! I'm excited because prior to being approached to write this article, I was having a conversation with some friends about it!! So please please PLEASE read my newest article entitled, "The Black Girl Dilemma" . I know that titled probably caused you to raise an article, but please wait to form an opinion AFTER you read it! And while you are over at Brownstone, check out some of the others articles! All of the correspondents and the EIC especially put a lot of work into this rela...

It's Mine!

Yes, the money is all mine! But actually this post is about hair. As I have told you all time and time again, I have natural hair. But being the Sierra I am, I like to change things up and keep people wondering what my next step will be. I'm also unapologetically an individual, so many times the things I do will not and do not seem mainstream. In the past, I've dyed my hair "purple" with semi-permanent dye. Lovely, right? However, such purple hair was only done with a rinse , meaning that after a couple of washes, the purple fades away. So now, I want to take things to the next level. Let me give you all a visual.  So I want to lift the color of my hair in the front section like so, And then let the purple take over and reign like this beauty has done, To me, this will be the needed touch to give me the "umph" I've been wanting for so long. I know what you're thinking, "So why not do it then?" Here's the d...

Hello everyone!

Image
I know what you're thinking, "Long time no blog, Sierra!" Well, I've been adjusting to my new life and I think I finally have the hang of things. If you don't know what the term "new life" refers to, I mean my life as a college girl! If you read my last few blog posts, you will know that I've been on campus since September 3rd! I haven't actually been in class, as I was here for a writing/cultural program. And, boy, did I love it. I learned about things such as inclusion, love, and success. I learned about accepting others. I learned to not put boundaries on myself.  I also gained some friendships that I see lasting for a very very long time. Living with 20 other girls on a floor may seem daunting at first, but it brought us all so much closer to one another. We went from the awkward "So...where are you from?" To "Is your boyfriend really coming? I'm jealous!"  And beyond just the friendships I've made with the other g...

It's Here

Image
Tomorrow. It's here. No more counting down. No more wondering 'What if?' No more packing and shopping. I leave for school in the morning. Am I excited? Yes. Am I nervous? Yes. Am I ready? I hope so. What can I say? The time has come that I officially become a Wildcat. Everything is packed, I've had all of my goodbye kisses and hugs, and I've cleared my countdown. Yes, part of me is a bit sad to say goodbye to life as I know it. But just as a song, the beat of life goes on. You can either jam with it or plug your ears (bad analogy?) I'll miss people. I'll call home with sickness. I'll feel lonely. But then I'll realize that this is what I'm meant to do. I've been preparing for this time for so long. Many before me have been homesick, and they made it through just find. People always tell me that college was the best time of their life. I can't fill it full with moping. I'm about to grab life by the reins and claim it! I want to find my...
